The owner of the Hair Shoppe, Judy Hooper, and the five stylists who work with her are offering free haircuts to unemployed residents who are going on a job interview.

“We hear about people [without jobs] and we were talking about it,” Hooper said. “If they need a haircut, men and women, we will do an update on a haircut and do that at no charge.”

While the Shoppe stylists are versed in color weaving, highlights and lowlights, and perms, Hooper said the offer is for a haircut only, to help people look a bit more polished before an interview. The free haircuts are a $30 value.

Hooper said they hadn’t seen a decline in clients with the economic downturn.

“I must say, as a whole, we have nice clientele,” she said. “We are holding our own.”

The salon, which also offers spa treatments such as pedicures, manicures and facials, has been in business for 28 years. The shop is inside the Hollister Paint Store at 57 East St., in Hollister, and has a side entrance for customers with a Hair Shoppe Sign outside. On a recent Thursday morning, several stylists worked on clients. In a lobby area, magazines were piled high on an end table for those waiting for their appointed time.

“They can call and what we will do is take turns, unless it is one of our own clients,” Hooper said, of anyone wanting to take advantage of the offer for a free haircut before a job interview.

The shop is open Tuesday through Saturday, and evening appointments are available.

The other stylists include Angie DeRosa, Ali Intravia, Robin Henke, LeeAnne Thrasher and Diana Stone.

In July, Hooper and they stylists plan to have a joint customer appreciation barbecue with Hollister Paint, though a date has not been set.
