Health Foundation hosts annual dental screening event for children

The San Benito Health Foundation hosted its annual ‘Give Kids a Smile Day’ on Wednesday to promote dental health among locals.

The event includes a free dental screening and fluoride treatment for children from infants to 18 years old, as well as fun activities for the younger ones. Some of the activities include face painting, coloring and a picture with the Tooth Fairy.

“We see the need for children to have regular dental exams from when they get their first tooth,” said Margaret Ornelas, the Women, Infant and Children manager at the Health Foundation. “Here at WIC we recommend moms bring in children when they turn six months.”

There was two dentists on site to see patients during the event. In the past, between 40 and 60 families have participated in the free exam. The dental clinic offers other dental services on a sliding scale.

Ornelas said the event offered her a chance to talk with families who are WIC eligible who are not enrolled.

“It’s awareness for the community and at the same time, when families come to this event we make sure families are aware of WIC and do same-day enrollment while they are waiting to get their dental exams,” she said.

Staff at the dental clinic did not return a request for comment before deadline.
