The Anzar Hawks played close against visiting Gonzales in the first half but simply could not keep up in the second, as a two-goal deficit at the break eventually turned into a 6-0 loss at home on Tuesday in San Juan Bautista.

“It was a pretty even match, except my players lost so many balls at midfield,” Anzar head coach Carlos Vargas said. “We gave the ball away most of the time. They took advantage.”

Anzar was coming off its first win of the season — a 5-1 victory over York. But Tuesday’s loss drops the San Juan Bautista school to 1-3 in the Mission Trail Athletic League, 2-5 overall.

The Hawks will look to rebound on Thursday when they will visit Marina at 4 p.m.
