Despite an early goal from Brian Cruz, the San Benito High boys soccer team couldn’t keep Carmel at bay Thursday during its season opener, losing by a 4-1 margin.

Cruz’ goal was deposited in the 15th minute of the game, and put the visiting Balers on the board 1-0. But Carmel’s Cameron Yeater knotted the game at 1-all just six minutes later on a penalty shot.

The two teams remained at 1-1 until halftime.

“We dominated most of the first half,” San Benito boys head coach Ramiro Ramos said. “In the second half there were two mistakes … that shouldn’t have happened.”

Carmel scored the go-ahead goal in the second half when Tito Paz found the back of the net at the 55th minute, while teammate Eliud Ortiz made it a two-score game with his goal later in half.

Padre Ruben Gamez made it four unanswered goals with his point coming with approximately 30 seconds remaining in regulation.

San Benito (0-1) will open the Homestead Christmas Cup XVI on Saturday at De Anza College. The Balers will play Los Altos at 3 p.m.
