Francisco Palomino scored two goals and the San Benito boys’ soccer team jumped out to a three-goal lead en route to a 3-1 victory over host North Salinas on Tuesday in Tri-County Athletic League action.

Palomino scored first in the 36th minute for the Balers, a goal set up by Jose Juan Santoyo that pushed San Benito ahead 1-0 at the half.

The Balers then tacked on two more goals in the second half, including another by Palomino in the 55th minute off an assist by Andres Corona. Martin Navarro made it a 3-0 lead in the 60th minute on a goal set up by Brian Cruz before North Salinas deposited its lone goal in the final five minutes of regulation.

“The first half, we were playing kind of sloppy. But the second half we played our game,” San Benito head coach Tony Deras said. “I was really happy to see them pick it up.”

San Benito and North Salinas previously tied 1-1 on Jan. 11.

The win, San Benito’s second in a row and third in its last four games, improves the Balers to 3-3-1 in the TCAL, 9-3-2 overall.

The team will host Salinas in a key showdown on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The Cowboys currently sit in third place, and previously topped the Balers by a 3-1 margin on Jan. 13.
