With the defense once again posting a shutout, the San Benito girls’ soccer team received all the offensive support it would need just six minutes into regulation Thursday, as the host Balers scored early and finished late en route to a 4-0 victory over Everett Alvarez.

Dora Juarez’s goal in the 6th minute, off an assist by Hannah Cobb, was the difference for the Balers, although the team did tack on three more goals in the second half.

Meanwhile, the Baler defense managed to keep the visiting Eagles off the scoreboard. It is the team’s 10th shutout this season.

“Overall, it was a good win,” head coach Ben Alvarez said. “We ended the first half of the season on a good note.”

Through the first half of the Tri-County Athletic League slate, the Balers remain undefeated at 4-0-1 in league play, 8-0-5 overall.

San Benito will open the second half of TCAL action on Monday when it will host North Salinas at 3:30 p.m. The Balers previously defeated North High by a 4-0 margin on Jan. 10.

In the first half of Thursday’s game, meanwhile, Alvarez felt his team was playing a lot of “kick ball,” and were not displaying a tight, organized passing game, leading to San Benito’s narrow lead at the break.

“We did take a lot of shots, but the goalie stopped a lot,” he said. “In the second half, we started to commit to the passing and the goals started to come.”

Right away, Cobb set up her second goal of the game to Sara Yamasaki in the 47th minute, and then deposited her own unassisted score in the 62nd minute with a shot from roughly 30 yards out.

“The goalie had it in her hands but it slipped right through,” Alvarez said.

Later, in the 70th minute, the Balers turned the contest into a rout when Dez Martin’s corner kick resulted in a header goal for Cynthia Trujillo, staking San Benito to a 4-0 lead.
