The San Benito girls’ soccer team closed out its regular season campaign in a rather appropriate manner on Friday — with a 2-0 shutout against host Everett Alvarez.

It was the Balers’ 14th shutout of the season, and the team finishes with a 14-1-5 overall record, 10-1-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League. San Benito placed second in the TCAL as a result, one game behind undefeated Gilroy.

Both teams will advance to the Central Coast Section Division I Championships, though, with seedings and matchups expected to be announced later today.

Friday’s matchup, meanwhile, saw both San Benito and Everett Alvarez held silent in the first half — a scoreless 40 minutes of play. But Sara Yamasaki snapped the streak in the 44th minute off an assist by Karly Leon to put the Balers ahead for good.

It was Yamasaki’s third goal in the last two games.

Hannah Cobb then added an unassisted goal later in the game, in the 68th minute, on a breakaway score from the back.

San Benito head coach Ben Alvarez said the Balers took roughly 18 or 19 shots on net, keeping in tune with the team’s usually heavy offensive onslaught. The Baler defense, meanwhile, prevented the opposition from doing the same.

The Balers outscored their opponents this season by a 48-9 margin.

San Benito will find out later today which team they will play next. Last year, the Balers were awarded the 10-seed but narrowly fell to No. 7 Leland by a 2-1 margin.
