After falling by a 9-0 margin to Carmel on Wednesday afternoon, the Anzar boys’ basketball team returned to the pitch in San Juan Bautista and delivered a 2-0 shutout victory over visiting King City in Mission Trail Athletic League action.

“We controlled most of the game,” Anzar head coach Carlos Vargas said.

Ivan Mejia deposited the Hawks’ first score in the 15th minute off a pass from Carlos Gonzalez, while Andres Munoz made it a two-goal lead in the 44th minute with an unassisted breakaway goal from midfield.

Anzar is now 3-4 in the MTAL, 4-6 overall.

There was a somber feeling before the game, however, as many students were mourning the loss of student Jose Mario Serrano, an Anzar senior who was killed in a single-vehicle rollover accident on Thursday evening.

Vargas said there was a moment of silence for Serrano prior to kickoff.

The Hawks are off until Tuesday when they will visit Greenfield at 4 p.m.
