After 160 minutes of scoreless soccer, the San Benito girls soccer team finally got on the scoreboard Tuesday when it pocketed a pair of goals and defeated host Pioneer 2-1 in San Jose.

The victory is just the second for the Lady Balers this season. The team was coming off a 1-0 loss to Scotts Valley on Dec. 14, and more recently, a scoreless tie with Sobrato on Dec. 17.

“We needed this win to get ready for our league games,” San Benito head coach Ben Alvarez said.

The Lady Balers, who improve to 2-3-2 on the season, will open Tri-County Athletic League play next Thursday against Notre Dame.

Tuesday’s win was San Benito’s final preseason test, and things progressed positively for the Lady Balers, who led 1-0 at halftime.

Hannah Cobb’s corner kick in the 25th minute found Sara Yamasaki in the box, who headed it in to put San Benito up at the break.

Pioneer managed to tie the game at 1-all within the first five minutes of the second half on a rebound goal, but Cobb’s corner kick in the 56th minute helped the Lady Balers pocket the go-ahead goal.

Cobb’s kick found Yamasaki once again, but the junior midfielder’s shot attempt was blocked by a Pioneer defender. San Benito teammate Nicole Yost corralled the rebound, though, and deposited the eventual game-winner into the upper left corner of the net.

San Benito had 20 shots on net in the game, many of which were one-on-one situations.

“They were a very good team,” Alvarez said. “We had a lot of breakaways, but she was an amazing goalie.”

Pioneer had 13 shots on net.

The Lady Balers will open up TCAL play on Thursday, Jan. 7, against Notre Dame. The game, originally scheduled for Jan. 8, will be held at Monterey Peninsula College.

Kick-off is 5 p.m.
