Daniela Ocampo scored in the 6th minute, Hannah Cobb added a pair of goals and the San Benito Lady Balers opened Tri-County Athletic League play on Thursday with a 4-0 victory against Notre Dame at Monterey Peninsula College.

Sara Yamasaki also pocketed a goal in the 36th minute, in which the San Benito junior launched a throw-in from the sideline that ricocheted off a Spirit and into the net, giving the Lady Balers a 3-0 lead at the break.

“We came out on fire,” San Benito head coach Ben Alvarez said. “The girls were ready and pumped.”

It was San Benito’s first game since Dec. 29, when the Lady Balers posted a 2-1 win over Pioneer. San Benito is now 1-0 in the TCAL, 3-3-2 overall.

“We came out strong today,” Alvarez said. “We wanted to go and play tough, and get us going for the next game.”

Ocampo’s goal in the 6th minute, assisted by Yamasaki, supplied the Lady Balers with all the output they would need. But San Benito scored three more goals for insurance.

Off a pass from Victoria Perez, Cobb delivered a long shot on net from approximately 40 yards out, Alvarez said. Cobb followed the lengthy attempt and scored on a rebound in the 21st minute.

Yamasaki’s throw-in goal made it 3-0 just before the half, while Cobb added her second score in the 58th minute off a corner kick. The San Benito junior hooked it around the post and into the net, supplying the Lady Balers with their most comfortable win of the season.

“From then on, we spent 95 percent of the time on their side,” Alvarez said. “Our defense didn’t allow anything past the 50-yard line.”

Alvarez said San Benito took 30 shots on net, while Lady Baler goalie Elizabeth Miller had just four saves.

Notre Dame is now 0-2 in the TCAL, 1-6-1 overall.

“Shot after shot after shot,” Alvarez said, “something had to happen.”

San Benito will host Alisal (1-0 TCAL, 7-0-2) on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
