MONTEREY
Just three days after it suffered a 3-1 loss at home to Monterey Peninsula College, the Gavilan men’s soccer team hooked up with the Lobos again on Friday in Monterey and posted a much different outcome.
Behind a late first-half score from freshman mid Nick Rose, the Rams held on in the second half en route to a 1-1 tie with MPC in what was the Coast Conference opener for both teams.
Gavilan is now 0-0-1 in the conference, 2-3-2 overall.
Rams head coach Albert Marques said Gavilan came out slow in the first half — and as a result fell behind 1-0 to MPC — but finished strong and carried over the play into the second stanza.
“In the second half, we were driving,” Marques said. “We had a couple shots, but we just couldn’t put it in.
“We were close … lots of good chances.”
The Gavilan head coach said not much was changed in between the back-to-back games against MPC, despite the different results.
“We’re just still trying to do what we can do,” he said. “We stepped up at the end of the first half, and the second half was a slugfest.”
The Rams will look to carry over any momentum into Friday’s conference matchup in Livermore, where Gavilan will square off against Las Positas College.
Kickoff is 6:30 p.m.
