Coming off their first victory against Milpitas, in which they defeated the Trojans 3-0 after taking 23 shots on net, the San Benito Lady Balers were held in check by visiting Scotts Valley on Monday during a non-conference game in Hollister, and lost by a narrow 1-0 margin.

San Benito was held to single digits in the shots department by Scotts Valley, which although didn’t rack up many attempts on net, did find the eventual game-winner just 20 minutes into regulation.

“We came out somewhat slow in the beginning,” San Benito head coach Ben Alvarez said. “But we held Scotts Valley to five shots in the first half.”

The only problem was that San Benito didn’t take any shots on net in the first 40 minutes.

“At halftime, I had to make some changes,” Alvarez said.

And within the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Lady Balers planted four shots on Scotts Valley’s net. San Benito was held shotless for the rest of the game, however.

“But the pressure was on that side, about 90 percent of the time we were on their side,” Alvarez said. “But they had a great defense.”

The loss puts San Benito at 1-3-1 on the season, while Scotts Valley improves to 2-2-1.

The Lady Balers will return to the pitch on Thursday when they host Sobrato at 3:30 p.m.
