The San Benito High softball team went 2-0 to open the Annie Lynch Memorial Circle of Champions on Saturday at the Salinas Sports Complex, where it defeated Los Gatos 2-1 and Hillsdale 4-3.

The one-run victory over Hillsdale went nine innings, with the Balers plating two runs in the top half of the ninth.

Both runs came off the bat of Marissa Adame, who connected on a two-RBI double to score both Jessica Steigelman and courtesy runner Ellie Burley.

Paige Miguel (9IP, 3H, 3R, 3ER, 4K, 2BB) earned the win for San Benito, which is now 2-0 on the season. Teammate Taylor Fabing had a pair of hits in the game, including an RBI double in the fourth inning.

The tight, one-run game came on the heels of another one-run matchup with Los Gatos, which plated one run in the seventh to cut into the Balers’ previous two-run lead.

San Benito scored runs in the first and third inning of that game. Jessica Vest hit an inside-the-park home run to left field in the opening frame, while Mari Vallejo reached on a single in the third and later stole two bases, capitalizing on a throwing error to third.

Miguel (7IP, 4K, 0BB, 1R, 0ER, 3H) went the distance as well, tossing seven innings and facing just 24 batters.

San Benito will return to the Circle of Champions on Saturday, when it will face Carlmont at 4 p.m.
