Behind a leadoff home run from Samantha Puentes and a complete game three-hitter from Paige Miguel, the San Benito High softball team rebounded from its first loss of the season last Saturday by trumping Valley Christian on Thursday by a 4-2 margin in San Jose.

Puentes’ leadoff homer, coming on just the second pitch of the game, pushed the Balers out to an early lead in the top half of the first inning. San Benito added a run in the third frame as well.

Brittany Sparrer, who connected on three hits in the game, singled on during the third inning before being pushed over by a Puentes walk and a Mari Vallejo sacrifice bunt. From third base, Sparrer then scored following a Brittany Hoff fielder’s choice ground out to first base.

Valley Christian cut the deficit in half with one run in the fourth inning, but the Balers responded in the sixth with a pair of runs, after Jessica Vest knocked in two runs with an opposite-field single to right.

Valley Christian again answered in the seventh inning with another run, cutting San Benito’s lead to 4-2, but the two-run deficit was as close as it would get.

The starting pitcher Miguel tossed all seven innings for the Balers, allowing no earned runs on three hits, while striking out three batters.

At the plate, Brittani Newman had two hits and Jessica Steigelman added a double for the Balers, who improve to 20-1 overall on the season.

San Benito will return to Tri-County Athletic League play on Tuesday when it will host Gilroy at 4:30 p.m.
