Keep the rainy weather coming in South County
Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain. The rain just seems to
keep coming this year. Finally, a year that can make most people
smile. Don’t you wish every year could be like this one? Hopefully,
we’re in for a good couple of wet years. We’ve darn sure had our
few years of dry weather.
Bill and Robin Rist branded the last set of their calves last
week on one of the dry days as well at the Peachtree Ranch. As the
rain keeps coming, the calves just keep getting bigger so hopefully
everyone is almost done with their branding otherwise folks will
have to rope some big old calves!

The Salinas Valley Fairgrounds was the site for another big barrel race last weekend in which many South County folks participated. Some of those competing included: Colleen Sabin, Betty Sans, Becky Doty, Jessika Willoughby, Concetta Gardner and Tona Andrade.

While many of the ladies were participating in the barrel race, a few South County youngsters headed over to Laton to compete in a JCCA Jr. Rodeo. Traveling over together from our area were Cheyenne Rey, Taylor and Twyster Hurley and Brody Sans. Dawson and Lila Bell tried to go but they had a little too much rain to be able to get out of their place that early in the morning. Cheyenne won the pole bending and team roping in her age group while Brody and Taylor won the team roping in their age group and Taylor won the barrel race as well. Tywster got on his first calf and rode it for at least four seconds. You’d think he won the world after that and now he’s already entered up in the next one. Way to go, Twyster! Brody rode his steer for the eight seconds but was granted a re-ride. He rode it, but it wasn’t any better than the first one. He was a little disappointed but at least her covered two steers that day.

Congratulations goes out to Jae Eade who was the big winner at the San Benito County Cattlewomen’s Association annual Pedro Party last Friday night. There was a three-way tie for first, but after a high card draw Jae was declared the winner. Vickie Sabin reported that it was a very fun evening and a very successful event for the Cattlewomen.

Don’t forget to get your tickets for the Tommy Cash concert that will be held in the Pavilion at Bolado Park on March 13. Tommy, Johnny Cash’s brother, does a tribute to Johnny so the show should be fantastic. For more information, contact Kenny Rose or you can pick up your tickets at Ranchers Feed in Hollister, L.A. Hearne in Prunedale or at Bolado Park.
