Relief sets in when Salinas Valley fair ends
Fair time in the Salinas Valley has come and gone for another
year.
Hooray! We all love the fair but it is a great relief when
Sunday evening finally arrives. The kids go all weekend long on
adrenalin, parents go all weekend long on empty! All in all, it was
another successful fair for all.
Relief sets in when Salinas Valley fair ends

Fair time in the Salinas Valley has come and gone for another year. Hooray! We all love the fair but it is a great relief when Sunday evening finally arrives. The kids go all weekend long on adrenalin, parents go all weekend long on empty! All in all, it was another successful fair for all.

Congratulations to Mark Tobias from Hollister for raising and showing the Grand Champion Steer. Mark always has great steers for the local fairs and does a great job representing San Benito County.

Bitterwater 4-H club members had a great time and did very well with all of their projects. Everyone won first or seconds with their woodworking, poster and photography projects, and all of the swine members did very well with their hogs. Our club had several members make it to the Championship round in the showmanship class.

A big congratulation goes out to Twyster Hurley for winning the Mutton Busting during the Championship Bull Riding on Saturday night. He was proudly wearing and showing off his new buckle on Sunday. Hec Hurley, Lee Whitney and Matt Cauley were the champions in the Wild Burro Race held the same evening. John Flook was entered in the bull riding and Tona Wright-Andrade was the Champion Barrel Racer.

One of the highlights of the fair was the Emerson Drive concert held on Friday night. They played to a huge crowd and the kids had a great time at the concert. The group has many very popular songs on the country music stations today. The fair staff did a great job choosing them as entertainers this year.

The livestock auction proved once again to be very successful with prices above average for another year. Thank you to all buyers who support the kids at the auction. Kids work so hard with their animals and they are always rewarded for their hard work at the fair. It was another great fair and another year full of memories for all who participated.

Many South County kids headed to Red Bluff last weekend to participate in the National High School Rodeo Association Wrangler Junior High Division State Finals. Competing from our area were Blane and Blaire Strohn, Courtnee Bowers, Bree Groves, Kristen Ceglia and Kristy Melton. Sierra Jo Sans qualified for the finals but unfortunately was unable to compete due to the weekend conflicting with the Salinas Valley Fair.

The kids had a great time in Red Bluff and were rewarded for their efforts. Congratulations to Blane Strohn, who won the State Championship in Boys Goat Tying. Blane definitely deserved the win as he is so dedicated and works so hard at his event. He and his sister Blaire also made the short go in the ribbon roping event.

Kristy Melton made it to the short go in barrels and ribbon roping with her partner Taylor Karney. She and Taylor qualified for the National Finals in the ribbon roping. Courtnee Bowers qualified for the short go in the breakaway roping and she also competed in the goat tying and barrel racing as well.

Sierra was sure sorry she had to miss the rodeo, but she already had her pig for the fair. Sure sounds like the kids had a great time and represented San Benito County very well. Congratulations to all the kids for qualifying for State, and good luck to those who made it to the Nationals.

Now that the fair has come and gone, it’s on to the San Benito County Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo!  It’s always something!
