It was wet, wild and wonderful last week in South County. The weather was just fantastic. Creeks were almost overflowing. There were mudslides everywhere and boy, was the grass growing every step of the way. It was wonderful!

Some rain totals to report on include: 6 inches at the Rock Springs Ranch, 5.5 inches at the Sans Topo Ranch, 5 inches at Bill and Robin Rist’s place and 6 inches at Traci Eggleston’s place in Lewis Creek. Speaking of Lewis Creek, in the 18 years that I have been in this area, I have never seen that creek run as fast and as high as it did last week. I’ve been told it ran like that during the last El Nino year in 1997/1998, but since I was home with 3 little ones at that time I wasn’t out cruising around checking out the rain back then! Now that all my kids are in school and I’m out and about more, I was able to take in the scenery last week and boy, was it neat!

During big storms, we’re usually the first ones out of electricity and the last ones to get it back on. Last week we went through the whole windy, rainy storm with power, only to lose it at the tail end of the storm! Then we were without power for 2 days.

I don’t mind being without power at all. I enjoy the quietness with no TV or telephone. We played cards with the kids and went to bed early (even earlier than we usually do!). But once power gets restored, you realize what a luxury it is and how much you missed it.

While we were all enjoying the rain in this part of the country, Wyatt Bourdet headed North to Red Bluff to participate in the annual Red Bluff Ranch Rodeo. Congratulations to Wyatt and his teammates Frankie Martines and Chance Jackson for winning second this year. The team tied for second place with Greenfield resident Lee Whitney and his team. Wyatt heads back to Red Bluff again this weekend for the annual horse sale.

The California High School Rodeo Association District 4 hosted a rodeo last weekend at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in King City. Some of those participating from South County included: Megan and Kristy Melton, Megan Ford, Blane and Blaire Strohn. Also competing at the rodeo were the Wrangler Junior High Division contestants, those from South County included: Cheyenne Rey, Clayton Bacon, Brody Sans and Taylor Jo Hurley. Their next rodeo will be held the weekend of Feb. 13-14 at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds. The kids are participating in several fundraisers right now so if you’d like to help any of the kids out with their fundraising efforts, I’m sure they would all appreciate it.

San Benito High School has quite a few rodeo students attending there so Vera Gomes, a SBHS science teacher, has started a rodeo club for the kids. Vera is trying to come up with some fundraisers for their club as well. Thanks to Vera for her efforts to help keep the western heritage alive at San Benito High School.

The Salinas Valley Fairgrounds will be hosting a $2,500 added barrel race this weekend in the indoor arena. The event begins on Friday and continues through Sunday. Late entries will be taken the day of the event, you can contact me for more information.
