Over the next four weeks and with funds from the federal stimulus, Southside Road will be getting its asphalt replaced from the Hollister city limits to just north of Southside School.
“The county and city received some funding for work, and one of the projects for the county was the overlay project,” said Steve Wittry, the county’s public works administrator.
Paving already began this week on the road, with a lane closed off. Thanks to low bids on the initial project, the county has decided to continue the paving another mile further south on the road.
“The bids came in lower than expected, and we put a second package together and extended the overlay another mile,” Wittry said.
He added that county supervisors approved the request for bids Tuesday at their meeting.
The first phase of the two-part overlay project on Southside Road is expected to be completed in the next four weeks, according to Wittry, with the “heavy paving” being done this week. The second phase is still in the early stages, but bids for the extra mile of paving are due from contractors in mid-November.
Witty said he has “no idea” the last time work was done on Southside Road. He said it has been “several” years since any work has been completed and it has been “nothing to this extent.”
At the county board meeting this week, Wittry cautioned drivers to allow for extra time with work being done.
Supervisor Reb Monaco noted how a resident told him he “really appreciated” the work because it has been needed for a long time.
