Frank Reyes wasn’t searching for a coaching job when the Anzar High football head coaching position opened up.

The Hollister American 9-10 All-Star team never knew what it was like to play from behind—until the District 9 tournament championship game on July 11. Trailing friendly rival Hollister National 7-4 entering the top of the sixth inning—meaning it was three outs away from defeat—American roared back to post a 8-7 win in seven innings.

The District 9 Little League 11-12 All-Star championship game featured two flamethrowers in Scotty Freund and Noah Perez.

Suzy Brookshire, an incoming San Benito High senior, was recently named to the Cal-Hi Sports All-State Softball Underclassmen First Team as a catcher. Brookshire, who made a verbal commitment to Sacramento State in her sophomore year, has produced two of the most prolific offensive seasons in school history.

Hollister’s Little League All-Star teams made it a clean sweep in the District 9 championship games on Saturday, winning the 8-9, 9-10, 10-11 and 11-12 age divisions at Veterans Park.

Scott Smith has not been retained as San Benito High’s softball coach. Under Smith, the Haybalers have enjoyed tremendous success, winning nine Central Coast Section Division I playoff championships in the last 10 years.

The friendly showdown is set in the Little League 9-10 All-Star District 9 tournament.

Frank Reyes and Craig Yamaoka were hoping for competitive games in their team’s respective semifinal games on Tuesday. Reyes got what he wished for, while Yamaoka’s club was simply too good to be challenged.

There were 5-year-olds riding sheep, all doing their best not to fall off. Boys and girls rode their horses alongside their parents in an attempt to rope the horns and heel of a steer.
