Jake Blackburn stood like he was in the big leagues as he waited his turn to hit at the ABC Baseball Camp at Veterans Memorial Park.

ABC Baseball camp was back in session at Veterans Memorial Park this past week and kids from all around San Benito County came out to enjoy the challenges and test their skills as a ball player. ABC Baseball Camp is a nationwide baseball camp program that helps kids hone their skills from a young age and keeps older players in the game through coaching.

One of the trainers on site last week was Casey Fuller. Fuller, a former standout at Sacramento State University, played several years as a first baseman and outfielder in the Colorado Rockies Organization and is now an ABC Baseball Camp coach.

“The camp keeps me involved with the game” he said.

The campers starting out hitting wiffle balls and then tennis balls before graduating to hard balls. The campers participated in their share of skill challenges through a variety of on and off field drills. Most of the games involved skills they learned from the last drill. Every player in the group was involved and everyone kept on their toes.

John Blackburn, a scrappy 8 year old with his White Sox hat slightly twisted to one side, teed off on tennis balls in the batting cage.

“We get to learn and I get to hang out with my brother and friends,” he said, ever serious about the game.
