Menlo Atherton Tournament up next
Morgan Hill – The San Benito volleyball team just keeps on rolling over the TCAL competition.
In the first-ever meeting between the two varsity teams Thursday, the Haybalers defeated Sobrato in three straight games.
San Benito is now 22-3 overall and 4-0 in TCAL.
The experienced ‘Balers had little trouble defeating the young Sobrato squad, which is made up of 10 sophomores and three juniors. They held the Bulldogs to 24 points total in Games 2 and 3.
Sobrato did hold a brief 4-point lead in the third game, propelled by three ace serves by Janie Aylard and a couple San Benito errors. But a kill and three consecutive aces by junior Morgan O’Laughlin tied the game up and the ‘Balers cruised from there.
Emily Kortsen led the team in kills with 10, followed closely by O’Laughlin with eight. In the win against a team they clearly outmatched, the Haybalers were able to get some production from their bench as Stacey Mead came in and played well.
“We played into the bench tonight and a couple of girls really impressed me,” said SBHS head coach Dean Askanas. “Stacey Mead played well and I could see her helping us out on defense in the future.”
