Albino Hernandez, 53, of Stockton was arrested by the California Highway Patrol on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and causing injury to another, according to San Benito County Jail records.
The 8:35 a.m. accident happened when Hernandez was westbound on Highway 156 in a 1987 Nissan Sentra, the CHP said. Hernandez’s car was reportedly following a 1979 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Guadalupe G. Salazar, 32, of Ivanhoe.
As the two vehicles approached the intersection of Lucy Brown Lane, a tractor-trailer rig several cars ahead of Salazar slowed down to a near-stop to make a right turn. Salazar slowed for the traffic, but investigators said Hernandez did not.
Because he was following Salazar too closely and because of his intoxicated condition, Hernandez’s vehicle struck the rear of Salazar’s pickup, the CHP said.
Salazar sustained minor scrapes and bruises and complained of pain in his back, the CHP said. He refused medical treatment, opting instead to seek his own medical care, the CHP said.
