This spring, 165 Gilroy High School sophomores produced videos chronicling the lives of local World War II veterans.
These Stories of Service recount tales of being the target of kamikaze attacks, surviving a holocaust camp, spending up to 45 days submerged in a submarine and much more.
For the films – which are generally narrated by the veteran – students worked in teams to get the veterans’ stories, find photos and videos from the time period, assemble the information into a cohesive visual and auditory narrative, and turned them into DVDs.
The Times is honoring these veterans and the work of these students by showing one of the 26 videos every Wednesday from today – the Wednesday before Memorial Day – to Nov. 12 – the day after Veterans Day.
In this Story of Service, San Jose native Luke Marden recounts his time aboard a battleship in the Pacific Ocean and the fierce attacks he faced out there.
