“Striking 12” offers an original score that interweaves a perky, optimistic tone into Hans Christian Anderson’s woeful tale of the “Little Match Girl”. The story is wrapped in enjoyable music and brilliant execution on an amped type of electric violin (called a six-string Viper) that is as fascinating to look at as it is stunningly beautiful to the ear.
“Striking 12” is a package of joy that will appeal to just about anyone who takes pleasure in music played on unique instruments by superbly talented people who radiate a love of what they do. Their vibrance permeates the audience from the first clear note to the last.
Valerie Vigoda’s amazing multi-tasked performance on this unique instrument while singing with equal perfection at the same time is well worth the trip. Extraordinarily talented musicians Brendan Milburn and Gene Lewin bring the program up to a five-star performance.
The production combines folk, jazz and classical styles with a pop influences in a unique theatrical format of a “concert-play.” Music played by the three finely trained musicians gently filters through 16 speakers.
GroveLily, the featured band, is considered one of the hottest young alternative rock bands in the country. For information, visit www.GrooveLily.com.
The direction keeps the performances relaxed and witty but with a tautness that gives the overall presentation a freshness and subtle anticipation. There is a thread of wonder and innocence throughout that gives the delivery a touch of charm that is like the cherry on the sundae.
This is high quality entertainment that pushes the musical talent bar to new heights.
