The San Benito County Office of Education, along with the San Benito Arts Council, will host the 2018 Arts Showcase for K-12 Students from 5pm to 7pm Feb. 15 at the Veterans Memorial Building, 649 San Benito St.

This year’s theme is “The World Around Me: Celebrating Diversity in the Arts,” and there is still time for students, grades pre-kindergarten to 12th grade within San Benito County, to enter this year’s showcase, with a 4:15pm Feb. 9 deadline. All entries must be made to the San Benito County Office of Education, 460 Fifth St.

Class entries need to be a variety of at least three presentations, avoid all entries having the same image, according to showcase rules.

Artwork categories are:

  • 2D Art (i.e. painting, drawing, mixed-media)—no larger than 11”x14”, artwork may be framed, unframed or mounted on cardstock;
  • 3D Art (i.e. sculpture, ceramics, mixed-media)—no larger than 12”x12”
  • Literary Art (fiction, nonfiction, poetry)—1 page 8.5”x11”, mounted on cardstock; and
  • Students may submit 1 entry per category.

San Benito Arts Council will select a variety of exhibits to display at their Arts Now Breakfast in February. All other entries may be removed by the class/ parent designee Feb. 15 between 7pm-7:30pm, or otherwise picked up at the county office by the 23.

New to this year’s showcase, teachers are invited to submit up to five photos that capture students participating in art activities to be part of a video presentation. Please send photos to

County students meet reading challenge

Students across San Benito County read more than 6.4 million words or 18,338 books over this past summer, more than doubling a Footsteps2Brilliance Challenge issued to them to collectively read 3 million words, according to a Dec. 6 announcement from the San Benito County Office of Education.

The highest student reader in the county was Emma Reyna from North County School with a total word count of 565,011.

The second highest student reader in the county was Flor Sandoval from San Juan school with a total word count of 313,316.

The county provided trophies to the top performers; a pizza party to Spring Grove for reading the most words overall; a “brag tag” charm and necklace to the top reader from each class; a certificate to the teacher whose class had the most combined words read; and a reaching trophy charm/necklace to each student from the class with most words combined, according to the press release.
