They leave as high school students enjoying a summer off, but return with management skills, confidence and the will to lead San Benito High School into the new school year.
The 40 members of the SBHS Associated Student Body/Student Council took off to leadership camp in Santa Barbara this morning, and will go through a series of seminars and activities to build their confidence.
“One of the things the camp does is push us to step outside the box and meet other people,” ASB Press Secretary Stephany James said.
For the five days the Balers are down south, they’ll be matched up with roommates from different schools, which forces them out of their comfort zones, and helps them to build friendships with student councils from other schools.
In order to become good leaders, the students will also participate in hands-on activities to help them face their fears, and seminars discussing issues they deal with on campus, such as racism.
In high school settings, students have a tendency to group off into clicks, but James said, as leaders, it’s ASB’s job to unite the school, and camp helps them learn how to do it.
“They teach us different methods to align our student body,” she said.
For those students getting closer to college application time, the camp, which is held on the University of California Santa Barbara campus, gives them a taste of what dorm life is all about, and just how big a college campus really is.
“A lot of the leaders in the camp attend UCSB, so it’s nice for us to be able to talk with them as well,” James said.
After returning home from camp on Saturday, the students will begin planning freshman orientation for Friday, August 20.
