The San Benito County Board of Supervisors is expected to ask residents to clean up their act through a pair of proclamations Tuesday.
The proclamations include naming May as Clean Air Month in the county and designating May 11-17 as Bike Week.
The focus on increasing public awareness and education on air quality issues led to the creation of Clean Air Month. Every May, health and government agencies across the country devote time and resources toward Clean Air Month through various activities.
Clean Air Month is based on the belief that everyone has an effect on the air we breathe through the choices we make every day, from driving to mowing lawns and energy use.
Clean Air Month provides a way of focusing attention on various issues. Activities include exhibits and display booths at public events and poster and essay contests at schools and public service announcements.
Bike week is intended to at least temporarily convince residents to consider using alternative forms of transportation to get to work.
The week will include a wide variety of events and promotions, including Bike to Church Day, Kids Bike Rodeo and Off The Chain Bike Rides. Various local businesses will give discounts to bicyclists who shop at their establishments. Give-aways include, water bottles, T-shirts and other Rideshare promotional items.
San Benito County’s flat terrain in most residential and shopping areas makes it an ideal place to ride a bicycle. County programs Bike Share and Rideshare are alternatives to driving, which helps reduce traffic congestion, driving stress and pollution from vehicle emissions.
