Happy fall everyone. Now that summer is officially behind us,
it’s time to start looking forward to that promising wet, rainy
season! If we all start praying for rain now, we might actually get
some!!

Folks were busy down here in South County again last week. Birthday
wishes go out to two of South County’s newest teens – Shane O’Connor and John
Henry Donham both celebrated their 13th birthdays last week – Happy Birthday
boys!
Many folks headed to Dublin two weekends ago for the 5th Annual Ranch
Rodeo. This event is not your typical ranch rodeo, as it is both a team event and a judged event, not timed like most of your ranch rodeos. Hollister must have some pretty good cowboys, as they always seem to come home big winners from that event. South County’s own Stacey Schmidt won the Ladies All-Around title, earning herself a brand new pair of handmade spurs along with the title. She, husband Alex and friend Bill Everett won the Team Penning title as well. Stacey and Sally Askew placed third in the ladies’ branding while Kris Regan and Lynn Jacobsen placed second. The team title went to the team of Bill Askew, Jim Prewett, Dan Doss and Jim Neubert. Bill also won the Men’s All-Around Title, while daughter Kate won the little buckaroo branding. Adam Donati was the big winner in the Figure 8 Roping (again!). Others who participated from Hollister included: Pat Regan, Justing Fields, David Lackey, Eric Issacson, Wyatt Bourdett and John Donati.
Jeff and Jean Schmidt just returned home from a three-week train trip. They took the Coast Starlight to Portland, where they spent two nights with Jean’s sister and her family. From there, it was on to Seattle, followed by a ferry ride to British Columbia. After that, it was off to Vancouver Island, Port Hardy and Prince Rupert. From there, it was a full day train ride to Prince George, where they spent a night before continuing on to Jasper for a two-day stay. After Jasper it was off to Winnipeg and a Hudson Bay tour to Churchill. From there it was on to Toronto, back to Chicago and then back to California. They spotted several whales from the ferries, although one particularly large one turned out to be a submarine that was coming to the surface. They said the scenery from the trains, especially through the Canadian Rockies, was spectacular. They also toured the Columbia ice field. They saw ducks, geese, cranes and other birds on a tundra tour in Churchill but it was still too early to see any polar bears. They had a great trip and knowing them, I’m sure they have some great pictures. Maybe Jean will share them at one of the future Home Dept. meetings!
Ellen Schwarz hosted the first Hot Lunch of the year last Friday at
Bitterwater Tully School. The kids sure seemed to enjoy it, as well as the crew from the Beaver Damn Fire Department. Denise Donham will be hosting the annual pancake breakfast on Friday, the 27th, so if you’re in the area, be sure to stop by for pancakes, bacon and coffee.
Hope you all have a great weekend and until next week, if you have any
news you’d like to share, give me a call or e-mail me at we********@ao*.com.
