Riders enjoyed cooler weather and shorter courses in the South Valley Bike and Run Club’s second-ever mountain bike race at Harvey Bear Ranch.

And wouldn’t you know it, their times improved.

Each division produced better marks top to bottom in Sunday’s Midsummer Race than in the previous SVBRC event at Harvey Bear Ranch. That one was held on a sweltering July 19 afternoon and slated 13 miles for beginners and 21 for sport and experts.

Sport riders and beginners dropped three miles apiece for Sunday, but the experts had to cover 28 miles on a three-lap course. Each lap totaled roughly 1,500 feet of ascension. The course, which included fire roads and single track throughout the park, offered great views of Coyote Reservoir.

Chris Amsden of Los Gatos clocked 49 minutes, 47 seconds to win the men’s title in the 41-person beginner class, and Shannon Devine won the women’s in 1:01:08. Devine finished 24th overall.

San Jose’s David Porter (1:24:01) and Victoria Yoham (1:47:43) were tops in sport, and the expert winner was 40-year-old Dario Frederick (1:51:10).

There were 67 entries total.

Vendors who provided service for the riders included Concept Cyclery (bike maintenance), Mind Body Motion (massages), Sports Basement (athletic goods) and Hammer Nutrition (refreshments).
