There’s a familiar face blowing a whistle at varsity football practices for San Benito High. Shawn Tennenbaum returned to the Haybaler coaching staff after three years of building Watsonville High into a prominent football program. Tennenbaum went 21-10 overall, went 9-2 two years ago and 8-3 in 2002.

Now he’s back coaching defensive backs and wide receivers for Baler head coach Chris Cameron.

“Shawn replaced a good coach in Richard Hammond,” said Cameron of Tennenbaum. “We have a quality coach in return. Shawn is a professional. He’s here before everybody at the 6:30 a.m. practices and he’s coming all the way from Soquel. He’ll bring a lot of insightfulness and he’s a great teacher. We’re open to everything he has to offer. The kids really like him, too.”

“Coach Tennenbaum is fun to play for,” said wideout/defensive back Breyon Canez, a sophomore on the Baler footballt team. “He’s so energetic, he really gets me motivated to play. I’ve learned a lot from him, too.”

It was a tough decision for Tennenbaum to relinquish his head duties for the Wildcatz. Watsonville is returning one of the top backs in the Central Coast Section in Shawn Benjamin. Benjamin rushed for 1,300 yards and scored 28 touchdowns in ’02.

“It was tough for, not only because Benjamin was coming back, but there were a lot of other talented players, too,” said Tennenbaum, who is a full-time teacher at San Benito. “This was going to be my most talented team. I wanted to be here in Hollister. I wanted to be at a school that aspires to win. It’s good to be back.”

Tennenbaum said that he might be a head coach someday again.

“If the situation is right, I’d like that,” he said.
