Despite earning a third straight sweep through the doubles category, the San Benito boys’ tennis team could not outlast host Palma on Thursday, as the Chieftains managed to sweep the singles category en route to a 4-3 victory.

The loss drops the Balers to 2-2 on the season, 1-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League.

San Benito’s three wins all came in doubles on Thursday. Kyle Skinner and Eric Johnson beat Aengus Fanoe and Justin Sampoalo 6-2, 6-0; Sunny Singh and Brian Becerra won their match 6-3, 6-4; and brothers Andrew and Jacob Panger bested Henry Mirassou and Daniel Machado 6-3, 6-0.

But the final results weren’t as favorable for San Benito in the singles category, as Palma took all four matches to hold off the Balers. Chieftain Dominick Ottone defeated Jacob Garcia 6-4, 6-2; Hunter Johnson topped Nick Trillo 7-5, 6-1; Christian Benguard narrowly defeated Geoff Muzik 7-6, 7-6; and Arjun Sidhu dispatched Alex Reilly 6-0, 6-0.

Thursday’s match was San Benito’s third in as many days. The Balers will now take a couple of days off before picking up league play once again next Tuesday, when they will host Salinas at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.

Match time is 4 p.m.
