The Balers’ tennis team won its closest match of the season
Tuesday, defeating Notre Dame 4-3 at Hartnell College.
Anchored by the team’s top two players, Audrey Marshall and Ally
Triolo, the Balers took the top matches in straight sets.
Marshall dominated, winning in identical 6-1 sets to start the
day for San Benito. Triolo followed with another impressive victory
with straight set wins of 6-3 and 6-4.

Anchored by the team’s top two players, Audrey Marshall and Ally Triolo, the Balers took the top matches in straight sets.
Marshall dominated, winning in identical 6-1 sets to start the day for San Benito. Triolo followed with another impressive victory with straight set wins of 6-3 and 6-4.
No. 4 singles player Amanda Alvarez kept pace for San Benito, taking her match in two sets by scores of 6-0 and 6-1.
On the doubles side, San Benito struggled dropping two of the three matches. No. 1 doubles team of Annie Tobias and Gianna Brigantino lost their match in straight sets, falling 6-4 and 6-2.
No. 3 doubles pair of Rachel Logue and Marisa Hernandez also fell, losing 6-2 and 6-4.
The team of Berenice Bribiesca and Makenzie Miguel was the only doubles pair to win Tuesday, beating Notre Dame 6-2 and 6-4.
The victory brings the Balers overall record to 7-5 and 3-2 in league play. San Benito won’t play again until Oct. 18, when they host Salinas at the Ridgemark Tennis Center.
SBHS Water Polo
Both the girls and boys teams continued to do well in league play on Tuesday, sweeping Gilroy.
The girls team brought up three junior varsity players to earn “experience” in their game against Gilroy. Even with younger players, San Benito ran away with a 13-8 win.
They boys did even better for San Benito. Behind three goals from Carlos Huerta, San Benito dominated Gilroy in a 11-3 win.
Bryan Alcorn, Charlie Garcia and Jake Garcia all added a goal in the Baler victory.
San Benito traveled to Watsonville on Thursday. Look online at freelancenews.com for an update. The Balers will host their final home game of year Tuesday against San Lorenzo Valley. The girls game will start at 5 p.m. and the boys will begin at 7 p.m.
SBHS Cross-country
The San Benito boys and girls cross-country teams stayed undefeated in league play Monday as the Balers handed Gilroy High its first loss of the season.
The Balers were paced once again by Vanessa Estrada, who finished more than a minute faster than the next runner – San Benito’s Maura Forbush – with a time of 15:31. The Balers took the top three slots in the track-shortened race.
The Gilroy track at Christmas Hill Park was shortened to 2.5 miles because of construction on the full 3.1 course.
Amy Quinones finished third overall for San Benito with a time of 16:52 and Anjelica Collins placed fifth with a time of 17:20.
Overall, the Balers’ top-three finish anchored a 19-36 victory over the Mustangs.
The victory comes after the girls placed fifth out of 28 teams at the Crystal Spring Cross-Country Invitational in Belmont on Saturday. Estrada finished third overall with a time of 17:40 – nearly 40 seconds slower than first-place finisher Nikki Hiltz. Forbush finished in 22nd place for San Benito.
On Tuesday, the Baler boys did even better than the girls against Gilroy – grabbing the top-five positions to win 15-40. The Balers five runners, Said Hernandez, R.J. Collins, Omar Vasquez, Steven Velarde, Ricardo Esqueda, all finished with identical times of 14:26.
“They all finished at the same time,” head coach Jess Morales said.
The Balers will race Saturday at the Monterey Bay Invitational. The invite is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
AHS Volleyball
The Hawks continued to play well during the 2011 season, beating Gonzales for the team’s ninth win of the year.
Overall, the Hawks are 9-3 and 4-3 in the Mission Trail Athletic League.
The 3-1 victory ends a short two-game slide for the Hawks.
Head coach Chris Wardlaw could not be reached for further details.
