Once again, the golf disease known as “The Shanks” has surfaced.

While there are lots of remedies, there is no known cure. Penicillin does not work, but hypnosis might. A shank is when the ball is struck on the neck of the club.

It can be caused by lazy hands – when the hands do not square up the club face with the ball on time at impact.

Swinging the club too much from the inside to the outside instead of down the line toward the target also could cause a shank.

Another cause is that you might not be making a sufficient enough shoulder turn at the back swing. As a result, the body has moved too far ahead of the club at impact.

One method of practice is to address the ball and place a tee or tennis ball about two inches just outside your intended ball to hit. The visual of possibly hitting both might force you to swing the club a little closer to your body.
