Despite heavy rain Saturday at the Garlic Classic at Christopher High in Gilroy, the San Benito track and field teams ran well.

The boys squad scored 18 points and finished tied for seventh place out of 19 with Watsonville. Madera South placed first with 68 points. The girls did even better, finishing second behind Leland with 46 points.

Both team’s 4×100 relay team took first during the invitational. The girls’ Jessi Pfeifer, Simone Cooper, Savanna Wilson and Le Nae Stevens finished with a time of 53.92 – nearly a second faster than Leland’s second-place team.

The boys’ David Kret, Taylor Lothman, Paris Edwards and Anthony Kaye finished with a time of 45.28.

San Benito girls’ distance medley team also placed first with a combined time of 13:21.83. Vanessa Estrada placed second in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:11.66. Maura Forbush finished fifth with a time of 5:24.7

San Benito’s only other medalist was Krystal Alnus in the discus throw. Alnus finished in first after throwing 124-10 – more than 25 feet further than Santa Teresa’s Jjayme Gonzalez.

Ricky Esqueda placed fifth in the 3200 meter with a time of 10:11.88. Lucas Haro placed fourth in the 110 meter hurdles (16.76) and fifth in the long jump (18-07.25).

San Benito hosts North Salinas at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
