The San Benito boys’ 4×400 relay team finished in sixth place in a time of 3:25.43 at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto on Saturday, and improved upon its season-best time by approximately four seconds.

Previously clocking a 3:29.24 at the Wildcat Relays on March 13, the Baler foursome of Jason Roascio, Scott Medina, David Kret and Felipe Davila bested some 36 other teams at the exclusive invitational, which was held at Cobb Track and Angell Field.

St. Mary’s College earned the top time in 3:21.42, while San Ramon Valley (3:21.47), Skyline (3:23.43), Lincoln of Stockton (3:24.53) and Angelo Rodriguez (3:25.04) finished in spots second through fifth, respectively.

San Benito managed to edge Atwater (3:25.78) for the sixth-place spot, however.

The news wasn’t as good for the Baler 4×800 team, which was disqualified after finishing without the baton on Saturday.

Friday’s action saw the San Benito boys’ distance medley take ninth place with a time of 10:47.26, and defeating 30 other teams that were in attendance.

San Benito’s time placed them second in their heat behind Placer (10:40.99), which finished in eighth place overall. The top seven teams, including Castro Valley, Bellarmine, Miramonte, Palo Alto, Rocklin, Fairfield and Mountain View, all competed in the first heat.

Castro Valley was first overall with a time of 10:26.89.

Despite the ninth-place finish, San Benito’s time on Friday was an improvement of approximately 12 seconds for the Baler foursome. On March 13, the boys’ distance medley recorded a 10:59.25 at the Wildcat Relays in Watsonville.

Saturday’s field events at Stanford also saw Frankie Martinez compete in the discus and Sophie Coelho perform in the pole vault.

Coelho cleared 10-0 to take 10th place at the meet. Piedmont’s Nicola Garoutte was first with the bar set at 11-05 3/4, while five others finished tied for second at 10-11 3/4 and three more were tied at 10-06.

Martinez finished in 27th in the discus event with a 119-02, finishing short of Fowler’s Jacob Budwig (169-04), who took first place.

The San Benito track team is off until April 10 when it will travel to Leland to compete in the Don Bell Quicksilver Classic.
