In its first official meet of the 2010-11 season, the San Benito High track and field team delivered strong performances at Saturday’s Willow Glen Invitational in San Jose.

The Baler girls were led by Vanessa Estrada, Krystal Alnas and Darian Maroney, while the boys’ division saw strong performances by Jason Roascio, Scott Medina and David Kret, among many others.

Medina, who was sidelined with an injury at the tail end of last season, delivered a pair of first-place finishes on Saturday in both the 300 hurdles and high jump.

He recorded a 40.17 in the hurdles, defeating Willow Glen’s Dillon Haysbert (41.37) by more than a second, and leaped 6-0 in the high jump to edge sophomore teammate and fellow Baler Alex Garrat (5-10).

Jason Roascio also recorded a first-place finish for San Benito when he ran the 200 meters in 22.20, defeating Gunderson’s J’Tier Favors (22.40) by more than two-tenths of a second, while the San Benito 4×100 relay team took first in 44.10.

Gunderson was second in 44.91.

Second-place performances included David Kret’s 800-meter run, where he clocked a 1:59.44 to place behind Willow Glen’s Donald Plazola (1:58.88), as well as Enrique Ramos in the shot put, whose 48-06 was runner-up behind Oak Grove’s Leo Navarro (48-08 ½).

Jayjoel Fernandez in the 110 hurdles (16.35), Said Hernandez in 3,200 meters (10:05.06) and Lucas Haro in the long jump (19-06 ½) all placed third in their respective events.

Haro also placed fourth in the triple jump in 39-05 ½, while Sergio Alcala did the same in the 3,200 in 10:05.92.

On the girls side, Vanessa Estrada took second in the 1,600 meters in 5:27.28 to place behind Willow Glen’s Kylee Kiesow (5:26.47), and third in the 800 meters in 2.25.57 to place behind both Kylie Cleveland of Santa Teresa (2:24.37) and Kiesow (2:22.54).

Also in the 800, San Benito’s Maura Forbush finished fourth in 2:28.46.

Darian Maroney delivered three top-five finishes in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and triple jump. Her best performance was in the 100 hurdles, in which she finished second in 18.27 to place behind Christina Dobbins of Woodside (16.82).

Maroney also had two fifth-place finishes when she recorded a 53.78 in the 300 hurdles and 31-04 ¼ in the triple jump.

Meanwhile, in the field events, Krystal Alnas finished runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 32-06, placing behind Del Mar’s Berika Egberuau (33-07). She also took fourth in the discus in 91-03.

San Benito will now focus its attention on the Tri-County Athletic League, as it will visit Hartnell College in Salinas Thursday to take on both Palma and Notre Dame.
