Candidates in two races for elected office at the county level have neared or topped $100,000 each in fundraising, according to the final campaign disclosure statements due before the Nov. 2 election.
Candidates for the two county races submitted their statements. In the race for sheriff, Pat Turturici raised $11,451 for the period, but $126,981 during the entire campaign, according to his statement, showing an ending balance of $13,532. In the race for District 4 supervisor, Phil Fortino had raised $1,699 for the period, but his total fundraising for the campaign reached $98,489, according to his statement, showing an ending balance of $4,734.
Turturici missed the Thursday deadline, but submitted his documents Monday. Turturici in his latest statement, meanwhile, also included a $1,225 refund given to Hollister Collision. The county deputy sheriff’s union previously withdrew its endorsement of Turturici, partly due to the donations from the business owner, who is on probation for a felony drug and weapons possession conviction.
Turturici, the county undersheriff, is facing Watsonville police Lt. Darren Thompson in the race. The last filing period before the Nov. 2 election covers a relatively short time frame, from Oct. 1 through Oct. 16.
Thompson in his filing reported contributions of $1,969 for the period. He paid out $2,609 and had an ending cash balance of $3,250, according to his report.
During the entire year, he had raised $34,715 and he had spent $31,572, he reported.
The challenger running against Fortino in the supervisor’s race, Jerry Muenzer, reported raising $2,971 for the period and $42,995 during the campaign, while his ending balance was $4,435, he reported.
