There are two official candidates in the race for District 3 council member, while the Friday deadline was extended in District 2 because incumbent Councilwoman Eugenia Sanchez did not file for reelection.

In District 3, Councilwoman Pauline Valdivia will try for a fourth term in the November election against challenger Scott McPhail, a political newcomer who recently dealt with city officials who defied his efforts to run a marijuana dispensary in Hollister. Valdivia is the long-time head of Jovenes de Antano.

City Clerk Geri Johnson confirmed both candidates were qualified.

In District 2, former Councilman Robert Scattini, the county marshal, has filed. He served a term until 2006, when Sanchez won the seat. Resident Sergio Montanez has filed paperwork indicating his intention to run but must turn in at least 20 signatures from registered voters before 5 p.m. Wednesday.
