Faith-filled dentist follows two careers

St. Peter and other apostles of the early church devoted themselves entirely to spreading the Gospel, living on money given by church members. St. Paul, a late addition to the group, frequently performed paid outside work so as not to financially burden the young churches he founded. Since his occupation was making tents, self-supporting or “non-stipendiary” ministry is often called “tentmaking.”

Time to check progress toward retirement goals

Now that another year is ending, it’s a good time to take stock of where you are on your journey toward financial security. Of course, you could find many different “measuring sticks” to assess your progress, but you can certainly gain considerable information just by asking yourself some basic questions.

Sfingi: Italian doughnuts

In my Christmas column last year, I wrote about my family's Christmas Eve menu and how it changed when I began hosting duties. I shared the recipes for Decadent Hot Chocolate and Spiced Apple Cider. The room was filled with balloons, club memorabilia and pieces from the 1913 period, while everyone was treated to ice cream sundaes. Two bands played music from each decade and a good time was had by all. Both the Hollister City Council and San Benito County Board of Supervisors presented the members with proclamations recognizing the 100th birthday.

Marty: A system to redistribute public wealth

In our modern, mobile society, many of our traditional political and economic borders, such as county lines, have little or no function. Assuming the tax rates, fees and rules were the same, what difference would it make to an operating entity, let’s say a manufacturing company, if the San Benito County line extended half way into Silicon Valley?
