NFL Draft: Hollister’s Jacobson awaits NFL destination

It’s become nearly a daily experience for former San Benito High and Gavilan College standout Wade Jacobson. A trip to Gold’s Gym will be filled with the same thing each day: Lots of sweat, some heavy lifting and a ton of handshakes.

Hollister pastor seeks to ‘do away with misery’

One of his clergy colleagues refers to the Rev. Don Skow as “Hollister's Town Pastor” because of the close connection he has had with the community for decades. Skow explains that the success of his ministry has been due to his motto: “Don't compete, cooperate.”

Boxing: Trash talk gets personal for Mayweather, Guerrero

The hype leading up to Gilroy boxer Robert Guerrero’s WBC welterweight title fight May 4 against Floyd Mayweather Jr. has unfolded like a soap opera.

Now is the time for fresh favas

You may have noticed something quite peculiar in the produce section and farmers market these last few weeks. What appear to be “pumped up” string beans are in fact fava beans. Many cultures around the world, including Italians, consume fava beans. In this week's column, I look to my Sicilian heritage for some fava bean inspiration in the form of my Grandma Virginia’s unique preparation for this vegetable.

Medi-Cal partners have differing views on referrals

Although San Benito County supervisors have signed a letter of intent for the county to join the Central California Alliance for Health, two local stakeholders still need to work out their differences before the partnership can move forward.

Sequins at the supermarket and other fashion faux pas

Recently I was left in charge of my granddaughters – 5 1/2-year-old Gracie and 4-year-old Emily – for several hours  while my daughter and son-in-law ran a half marathon in Santa Cruz. (Yes, I know. The only explanation is that they gave me the wrong baby at the hospital; no way did I give birth to an actual marathon person).

Need a companion? Adopt a greyhound

April is National Adopt-a-Greyhound-Month. Every year, rescue groups, including The Greyhound Project, put out the word that they have dogs looking for homes. There are large numbers of dog racetracks across this country, and greyhounds and whippets are the breeds of choice for trainers and gamblers in this sport.

Gavilan Roundup: Rams softball team finishes season 12-26

Sierra Clark homered and drove in five runs to lead Cabrillo College’s softball team to a 19-10 win at Gavilan on Tuesday.

Housing options as we mature

Every spring millions of homeowner experience the annual ritual of getting their home ready for summer. For me, it starts with power washing the patio and pool decks, setting up outside furniture and getting the pool ready. And every year, as I pick up the paint brush, fire up the power washer and prep the pool, I wonder if there isn't an easier way. Although I enjoy having everything in tip top shape and having a nice place for family to visit, my motivation for home repair and maintenance isn't what it used to be. And frankly, I'm not convinced that I will get more motivated as I continue to age.

Fees adjusted for farmers market vendors before May opening

When the Hollister Farmers Market reopens for the season May 1, food vendors will be paying an adjusted fee for a health permit that should be more amenable to those who don't sell wares year round.
