The days of summer fun are over at the wineries. All the grapes have been picked and crushed and their juice is getting busy in the barrels - letting the aging process take over. But, before the season is over, Mother Nature has one last spectacular act in store for us. Like the last five minutes of a fireworks display where the best is saved for last, the vineyards have burst into flaming colors of red, gold and orange. As if to self-ignite themselves, the leaves that have nourished the grapes all summer long, are going out in a blaze of glory.

Hollister area haunts offer last-minute fun
For families looking for an alternative to trick-or-treating on Halloween, Swank Farms will have its Corn Maze and Conover Mystery Ranch Open for a special weeknight edition Wednesday, with daytime activities open at 10 a.m. and evening activities open at 6 p.m. The farm includes the haunted ranch deep in the corn field for those looking for a spooky time as well as activities that are more suitable to the more faint of heart, such as the Kiddy Corral. Kids can play on a giant jumping pillow, use a pumpkin sling shot or take a ride on a cow train, among other activities.
Local girl competes in event for blind, low-vision residents
A Hollister student participated in the 2012 Northern California Blind and Low Vision Olympics and came home with three gold medals and one silver medal in track and field events. Jayna Navarro, who is low-vision and a fifth grade student at Sunnyslope School, competed with other students in her age group. The annual event, which was held in Sacramento on Oct. 20, gave blind and low-vision students an opportunity to participate in a fun atmosphere, allowing them to enjoy the day with other youth and compete in athletic events.Â
Health officials urge to keep babies’ sleep environments sparse
Recently updated recommendations from the National Institutes of Health reiterate that babies should be placed on their backs to sleep for bedtime and naps, with an updated suggestion that blankets not be used in sleep areas with babies.
