Some non-political political thoughts before Election Day

Recently one of my Facebook friends, Irene, a woman I graduated with from high school, posted her frustration that one of her friends continually attempts to change Irene’s mind about her political leanings. Troubled by these ongoing efforts, Irene wisely remarked she’d rather concentrate on the reasons she and her friend like one another – rather than focusing on issues where they don’t always agree.

Another View: Let us not forget 9/11 memorials’ importance

Tuesday is the 11th anniversary of 9/11. And three months later, we will mark the 71st anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The two worst attacks on American soil each resulted in nearly 3,000 deaths and led the nation to war. Still, given the passage of time, Dec. 7 will be noted with minimal, if any, reverence by most Americans, and, despite little more than a decade having lapsed since 9/11, already some memories are fading too fast.

Civil War reenactment set for the weekend

Visitors to the San Benito County Historical Park this weekend will have a chance to step back in time to the Civil War era at the annual Civil War Days on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Parents can learn about car seats at event

Parents who are flustered over how to install a car or booster seat for kids or who want some clarification on state laws around which kids need to be in safety seats can stop by the car seat check-up on Sept. 21, in the Kmart parking lot, 491 Tres Pinos Road, from 2 to 5 p.m. The event is part of Child Passenger Safety Week Sept. 16-22.

Foundation initiative focuses on women

The Community Foundation for San Benito County is promoting a new initiative that will focus on the needs of local women and girls. Launched in June, pledges and donations to the Women's Fund through the end of 2012 will be matched dollar for dollar up to $25,000.

Help design the regional park

San Benito County residents are invited to a public workshop on proposed regional park and the portion of the river parkway that will connect with it Thursday, at 6 p.m., at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St., in Hollister.
