It’s summer and it’s a great time to get eggplant at farmers markets or local grocery stores. Even though I don’t always like eggplant because of the super soft texture it gets when it is cooked too long, I decided to try a recipe my fiancé picked out of one of our cookbooks a few weeks ago. The recipe called for cooking the eggplant in two ways – sautéing chopped up bits of some of it with a flavorful filling mixture of ground beef, raisins, pine nuts and more, as well as roasting some whole eggplants which are then topped with the filling.

Families gathered at Dunne Park Wednesday for the annual Kids at the Park. The event promotes health, wellness and safety. Local nonprofits and agencies offered information on such varied topics as car seat safety, the importance of eating fruits and vegetables, and exercise, among others. Some of the groups present included the San Benito County parks and recreation commission, San Benito County Police Activities League, Emmaus House, Community Pantry, First 5 of San Benito County and more.

The holiday season might be six months away, but a group of local nonprofits have been planning since January to launch a new way for local residents to give in 2012.

Robert DeLuna took a little extra time off for Memorial Day weekend to make the 10-day “Run For the Wall” motorcycle ride to remember veterans who are prisoners of war or missing in action.
