Two cases of rabies were reported in North Monterey County this past week. One of these was in a dog, the other a skunk. It’s been while since rabies killed someone’s pet. But with this news, we know that rabies, a deadly virus contagious to humans, is in our own back yard.

Getting Out: Looking through the pines of Jack’s Peak
When I talk to people on the Monterey Peninsula who walk the preserves and parks in the area, they often mention Jack’s Peak County Park. My sister and her canine companion, Harry, recently came up from Santa Barbara for a visit, and we decided to rendezvous in Monterey for a short hike. Since Monterey’s county parks are dog-friendly, it seemed like a perfect time to go to Jack’s Peak and see what everybody has been talking about.
