A mechanical failure in the catalytic converter of a truck traveling on Highway 156 sparked four fires spanning a mile in the San Juan Bautista area, according to fire department staff members.

The Hollister Recreation Division is hosting "Movies in the Park"—free showings July 17 and Aug. 7—at Dunne Park.

The second day of the Hollister Freedom Rally was marked by sunny skies and visitors lauding the wide range of things to do while bikers and vendors called foot traffic slow.

As the 10 a.m. deadline for entering motorcycles into the Hollister Freedom Rally Custom Bike Show approached, there were 20 or so gleaming machines parked on the grassy area next to The Vault and in front of the Simms Custom Cycles trailer.

For riders like Debbie and Randy Liston from Camarillo in Southern California, it’s the history of the Hollister rally and all the bikers that keep drawing them back.

Gavilan football coach Mike Dovenberg could easily be mistaken for one of his players. During last Thursday’s practice, the first-year coach was out on the field, tossing the ball and training alongside his fellow players. Temperatures rose into the high 80s, but that did little to wear Dovenberg down. The newly minted head coach’s energy is infectious and it has spread to his players.
