Confederate soldiers fire their weapons during a re-enactment of the Civil War on Sunday afternoon at the San Benito County Historical Park in Tres Pinos. Rain couldn't stop the Union from beating the Confederacy over the weekend, but it did diminish the turnout of spectators. The National Civil War Association held its third annual Civil War Days and re-enactment over the weekend – which raises money for the San Benito County Historical Society. The event saw its smallest turnout in its three years here in the county. Organizers are attributing that to the weather. Still, the historical society is considering the re-enactment a success. "The rain didn't do us any good," said Peter Sonne, president of the historical society. "But everybody seemed to have a really good time." With around 300 people in attendance Saturday and Sunday, the event brought in about $1,000. Sonne said that with expenses, the historical society would "break even" on the event. The rain, however, didn't dampen participants' spirits. For those who did brave the gray weather, the re-enactors acted out battles four times over the weekend and portrayed daily life in the 1860s.

Mission City leaders are struggling to fill the dwindling ranks
