Let’s get ready to … not rumble quite so much.
With vast improvements needed along the rail line running from Gilroy to Hollister, Union Pacific plans to conduct improvements on the variety of intersections in the coming weeks, according to the city’s public works department.
U.P. has allocated about $1.8 million toward the project, which will involve the intersections leading into Hollister and those throughout the city as well, said David Rubcic, associate civil engineer for the city.

Rubcic noted how the U.P. has planned work at Hudner Lane and Wright Road for Feb. 7. From there, it will be in Hollister at Third Street on Feb. 14 and Feb. 15, then at Second Street and East Street on Feb. 22 before doing Fourth Street on Feb. 28 and South Street on March 7 and March 8, Rubcic said.
Much of the work will involve replacement of rail ties and concrete panels, while the city will perform some paving along with it as well. The county and city also will assist each other with paving and manpower on their respective portions of the line, Rubcic said. There will be detours set up in those areas, which Rubcic said drivers should avoid if possible.
“It’s a huge deal for the city because we don’t have to pay for it,” he said.
