District 3 City Councilwoman Pauline Valdivia has announced she will run for another term in office in the November election.
Valdivia announced her intention at Monday’s council meeting. She is serving in her 12th year on the council for a district that largely includes the southwest portion of Hollister.
Valdivia said she had been “laboring” over a decision to run for the seat again and that she has received “a lot of support from folks” about another attempt at reelection. She said she wants to leave at a time “when it’s a little better” financially and Valdivia noted that in the next four years, she wants to get an at-large mayor elected and work to draw more business into the city.
As for ideas to enhance the economy, “It’s really bleak, but nothing’s impossible,” she said.
She said for one thing, city officials should look at the possibility of offering more incentives to draw in additional business.
Valdivia also mentioned how she is “really anxious” to see how the city and county can work together to save money. She noted the idea of merging the county and city law enforcement agencies as one prospect.
“I know there’s other communities that have been doing it,” she said.
To apply for a spot on the city’s ballot, applications will become available on July 12, City Clerk Geri Johnson has said. Afterward, candidates have until Aug. 6 to turn in the forms. No primary election is held for city council candidates because that is stipulated in the California Election Code.
The District 2 seat also will be open. Councilwoman Eugenia Sanchez has been a member of the city council since 2006. That district covers the west end of the city. Sanchez did not immediately return a phone call for comment.
