Former San Benito High School softball star Jessica Vest and the Oklahoma Sooners just won the national championship. Now they are nominated for an ESPY for Best Team.
The No. 1 seeded Oklahoma Sooners won the NCAA national championship in early June by sweeping the championship series 2-0 over Tennessee in Oklahoma City. Vest started at shortstop. She went 0-for-2 and made two plays in the field.
The Sooners’ victory was led by World Series Most Outstanding Player Keilani Ricketts. The senior went 1-for-4 and drove in all four Sooner runs, keyed by a 3-run homer in the third inning.
The championship is the second in school history and the first since 2000. The Sooners reached the championship series a year ago, but lost in three games to Alabama.
OU finish the season with a 57-4 record, becoming the fifth school to win multiple national titles. The Sooners won their last 13 games to close out the season.
According to a statement from OU regarding the ESPN-run event:
Fan voting is now underway for all categories at ESPYS.com. Once the show begins, voting for Best Team switches to Twitter and fans are directed to use the hashtag #ESPYSBestTeam with the team name. ESPN.com and Twitter votes will then be combined at the end of the show to determine the winner.
The team category features a tremendous field. Oklahoma is up against the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics team, the San Francisco Giants, the University of Alabama football team, the Baltimore Ravens, the Chicago Blackhawks and the Miami Heat.
