The San Benito girls basketball team was defeated 54-44 by visiting North Salinas on Thursday night.

The Vikings (11-11, 4-4 TCAL) won each of the four quarters as they continue to look for a Central Coast Section playoff berth. North Salinas was up 26-20 at the half.

“They were in control all the way through,” said Haybaler coach Tom Dean. “They were hitting a lot of outside shots that they weren’t hitting the first time we played them.”

The Vikings made 22 of their free throws in the game, while the Balers made just eight.

“They slowed down the tempo of the game and full-court pressed us the whole game,” Dean said. “We handled it well 65 percent of the time, but the other 35 percent is what cost us. They took us right out of our game.”

Jaime Hall, who will be out the next game because a technical foul, led the Balers with 11 points, and Mallorie Wilson had 10.

San Benito (18-7, 5-3 TCAL), which has already qualified for the playoffs, will play at Salinas on Feb. 17 before finishing up with Notre Dame on Feb. 21.

“We were looking for the No. 1 seed,” Dean said. “But this loss means we will probably be a lower seed.”
